Takein the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, created by French naturalistPierre Poivre in 1767, which houses more than 650 varieties ofplants, Among these are the famous Victoria regia water lilies and 80different varieties of palm trees. It also houses the funeral shrineof Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, ‘the father of the nation’. Thetrip continues to the island’s capital city, Port-Louis, where youwill enjoy a panoramic view of the Champ de Mars racecourse and theCity from the citadel. You will also drive along Place d’Armes, andtake in the Saint Louis Cathedral, the Supreme Court, the MunicipalTheatre and Government House. Last but not least, is a stroll alongthe local market and the Caudan Waterfront with its many boutiquesand a kaleidoscope of local life.

TRADITIONALMAURITIAN DAY

Duringthis special day, you will meet local people and learn their tradeand way of life. Meet Rajcoomaree, a pensioner who shares her “dhollpuri” (pancakes stuffed with split peas) recipe. Then pay a visitto a seamstress, to discover her dress models while drinking somefresh homemade tamarind juice. Moving to Phoenix, Premila shows youhow traditional chutney is made and gives a demonstration of how tocook “samoussa”. After lunch at the Bhowany’s, the tripcontinues to Rose-Hill to visit a Tamil temple with some free timefor shopping and sightseeing.

AUTHENTICIMMERSION

Theday starts at the Bay of Mahebourg and its vibrant market where youwill have some time to mingle with the locals. A spectacular view ofthe town awaits from the tower of Notre des Dames des Anges Church –built in 1849. Your next stop is the washhouse with its rectangularstone where the local washerwomen once cleaned the uniforms of Frenchsoldiers. We continue the day with a visit to “Biscuiterie Rault”a biscuit factory where the manufacture of biscuits made of cassavahas not changed since 1870. Lunch will be served at the Nativ Lodge,beside La Chaux River. While being at the Lodge, the visitors willparticipate in workshops of appetizers and dessert. Lunch over; astop at the Naval Museum will highlight the end of the trip.
