Auberge de Saint Aubin

Review - Mauritius Villas

We tested Auberge de Saint Aubain end of January amidst the rainy season exclusively for you and we should say that we were blessed with sunny weather.

The picturesque road to Saint Aubin gives a real immersion feel with very local sights: local grocery shops, ladies draped in traditional clothing, school children in uniforms laughingly running home…

We arrived to our destination easily by following the signs. We entered the large gated entrance and drove in the tree-lined alley to the old house where four en-suite rooms open on a stone terrace. We were welcome by a young man and shown to our room. We booked a family room, which was themed as the indian room. The first bedroom opens on a second one with two single beds which opens on a large bathroom with shower. They all have windows opening on the green garden with towering tropical trees.

We ordered cold drinks (nope, no welcome drink) and walked to the sun-drenched pool. It’s a small one but the water was so warm that we felt like being in a jacuzzi. At nightfall, each table facing the rooms and the living area (we presume it was one) were set and we had dinner. We could choose between fish and chicken. We ordered both. The chicken was served with a vanilla sauce and the fish with tomato sauce. The starter consisted of a palm heart salad. By the end of the meal, we quickly swallowed the dessert and rushed to our room as mosquitoes invaded the terrace.

We spent a good night and woke up to the sound of the grasscutters… tables were set and we had breakfast. Being in a lush natural setting, we were hoping for fresh tropical fruit… but we had diced apples and oranges in a sweetened sauce… no coffee, no hot chocolate, but a variety of local tea and a chicory drink.

We had a swim and walked to the museum which is within the compound. The petting farm and the nursery are accessible for an extra fee. We would say that this is a good option if you are willing to see that part of the island for a day or two or to enjoy the experience of spending the night in an old house. Our departure went almost unnoticed by the staff. Well, we can’t really boast about the Mauritian hospitality here...
