The Chinese New Year is widely known as the Spring Festival in China. The festival is celebrated in January/February and the date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar. The Spring Festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring and represents the desire for a new life. According to the Chinese zodiac, this will mark the Year of the Rat.
Chinese
New Year is a public holiday in Mauritius. Many families will get together to
celebrate and feast on both Mauritian and Chinese cuisine. Celebrated
throughout the island, Port Louis is the centre of celebrations where you can expect
lion and dragon dances, streets decorated with bright colours and colourful
firework displays. Traditionally, fireworks are meant to “drive away evil
spirits”.
