Climbing Le Morne Brabant in Mauritius

Height: 556m

Duration: 3 hours (to reach the top)

Level of difficulty: Medium

How to get there: Coming from Black River Road A52, go straight on until you reach Le Morne village. Do not turn right when you see the signage on the yellow posts. Keep going and on your right hand side, you will notice the access leading to the foot of Le Morne Brabant. The dirt road will lead you to a parking lot.

What to bring: A charged mobile phone, water, your picture camera, sunscreen, a cap and a first-aid kit.

On a scale of 5, we would rate the climbing experience to be 2.5 for the casual climber. It can be challenging when the surface is wet and slippery. It would be wise and safe to consider that climb on a dry day. The sky is more likely to be clearer on dry days and needless to say, the view from the top is...breathtaking, ...overlooking the ocean with sailing boats weaving their way to the shore or offshore on the turquoise waters. Colourful kites dot the space creating a joyful mood.

Le Morne Brabant

A UNESCO World Heritage site in Mauritius

Le Morne Brabant had long been the hiding place for the slaves during colonisation. It is believed that when officials went up Le Morne Brabant to announce the abolition of slavery, the slaves thought that they were being hunted and jumped in the sea to put an end to their life. Explorations have led to the discovery of ‘huts’ on the mountain, occupied by the maroons. For practical info regarding the visit of the historical centre, see our article on the slave route posted on our blog.
