A workshop, aiming to sensitise some 40 Prison Officers on how to safeguard the human rights of detainees, opened this morning at Clos St Louis, in Domaine Les Pailles, in the context of Human Rights Day 2014.A workshop, aiming to sensitise some 40 Prison Officers on how to safeguard the human rights of detainees, opened this morning at Clos St Louis, in Domaine Les Pailles, in the context of Human Rights Day 2014.
Organised by the National Human Rights Commission, the half-day workshop is focusing on the following topics: Constitution of Mauritius; Criminal Appeals; Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; and, Prisons Rights of Detainees.
Resource persons are from the National Human Rights Commission, the Police Complaints Division, and the National Preventive Mechanism Division.
In his opening address, the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Mr Dheerujlall B. Seetulsingh, stated that Mauritius enjoys a very good reputation and track record as regards the respect of human rights be it at the level of the African continent or globally. In fact, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is inscribed in our Constitution, he said.
The chairman also mentioned important historical dates such as the abolition of slavery in 1835 as well as Mauritius' accession to independence in 1968 and universal suffrage (1959) as turning points towards guaranteeing human rights for all.
He also elaborated on the history of Human Rights Day as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
For his part, the Commissioner of Prisons, Mr Jean Bruneau, highlighted the vision of the Mauritius Prisons Service (MPS) which is to work towards a safer Mauritius through best correctional practice.
According to him, the MPS has spared no efforts to train Prison Officers in relation to the different aspects of human rights and the importance of treating detainees with due respect in line with their fundamental rights Each detainee has been provided with a human rights manual, written both in English and Creole to inform them of their rights and privileges, he pointed out.
