Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over the island during the
August / September. It marks the birthday of Ganesha, the God of wisdom
and remover of all obstacles according to Hindu mythology. The festival
provides an opportunity to see processions of devotees chanting and dancing on
the roads as they carry colourful effigies of Lord Ganesh towards the sea or
river. The effigies are made of clay and the event ends with it being gently
immersed into the water after a gala street procession where it disintegrates.
Most certainly a festival and celebration not to be missed!
