This month’s pick! Coffee or not coffee

We tested some cafes and pastry shops this month and have classified them in our order of preference. Our selection criteria were based on service, shop decoration, coffee quality, choice of pastries and cost.

Cafes seem to become trendy meeting places for both working people and tourists across cities in Mauritius. W’ve spotted a few franchises with ‘instagrammable’ looks and tested their coffee, milkshakes and cakes…

Our best pick is Lux Cafe. You will be be mesmerised by their range of cakes from cheesecake, macaroons (the best we’ ve ever tried locally), chocolate muffins, large oat cookies…They also have sandwiches, salads and a nice coffee selection. Whether you are in Bagatelle, Le Caudan Waterfront, you can stop by and grab a bite… It is just unfortunate that they have plastic take out boxes and cutlery…

We also enjoyed Gourmandise d’Anne in Le Caudan Waterfront and in Cascavelle. Besides regular pastries and cakes, they also have light savoury light bites. The teams are not very proactive and there is no table service, so make sure you walk to the counter and place your order or you may find yourself sitting for a while.

And finally we tried Artisan Truth Coffee… the decor is more laid-back just as the customer service. Little eye contact, no smile and communication does not seem to be the key aspect here… We were given our orders in paper bags despite we asked to eat in. We then understood that there were no plates (good eco-friendly initiative, we thought) despite the fact that they have tables…lots of tables… and two plastic cups with an awful-tasting hot mixture landed on the tables…was it really coffee?
